Five Steps to Writing Your Mission Statement!

I’m sure you’ve told the story of how you started your business. No doubt, you’ve told it so many times you can recite it in your sleep. That is your brand. The human element that draws people to you and your business. You aren’t the only person in your field, so why should customers choose you? Your brand, that’s why. And a part of your brand is your mission statement. It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and talk about yourself.

What makes you the best in what you do, and why your customers should choose you, is going to be the key to your mission statement.

Step One: What problems are you solving? You started your business for a reason, and the reason is probably to fix something or solve a problem. So tell everyone what that is and why it’s important to you.

Step Two: Remember when your mom would tell you not to “toot your own horn”? Yeah, forget that. Now is the time to toot-toot away and tell everyone why you’re awesome. Tell them about your extensive experience, successes and knowledge. What makes you different? Why should they trust YOU?

Step Three: What jobs have you done in the past that you’re really proud of? Who are your happiest customers? Did you build, design, plan something and it turned out great? Good! Talk about that. Why are you different from your competition?

Step Four: Clients can smell a fake. They know when you aren’t being genuine and if they don’t call you out on it, they will just go with someone else. So be yourself, customers will be better able to relate to you and your product when you are.

Step Five: Do you give back to your community? Part of your mission statement should focus on your community and what you’re doing to make it a better place. Charity, donations, your time spent helping people, talk about it.

This is just a jumping off point, not all businesses have the same outline. When you’re a small business or just starting out, it can be hard to start pinpointing all of your accomplishments.  If you run out of past experiences, talk about your dreams! What do you want to do in the future to make an impact?
